Icepick scars extend deep into the dermis layer of the skin, and are less than 2mm narrow. Boxcar scars extend only till 0.1-0.5mm into the dermis layer of the skin and appear in the form of oval depressions on the skin. Rolling scars occur deep inside the subcutaneous tissue. Such scars create a wavy texture on the skin.

For scars which are shallow, acne scar skin care treatments such as dermabrasion and laser resurfacing are used by dermatologists. Substances such as human and bovine collagen, hyaluronic acid derivates and fat are also used to fill the depressions caused by acne, through injections. Laser resurfacing involves burning the skin to a certain depth so that the affected area develops new skin. However, post surgical care is necessary for this treatment.

Several punching techniques are also adopted by dermatologists to cure icepick or box acne scars. Under this treatment cutter tools, matching the measurements of the scars are used to punch the affected area and the edges of the depression are stitched together. Replacing the punctured area with a skin graft taken from behind the ear is also a viable treatment. Rolling scars are treated through a method called subcutaneous incision, under which a needle is inserted under the skin to cut the skin bands that are connected to the subcutaneous layer.

For surgical acne scar skin care treatments, proper post operative care is required. Most procedures require 5-14 days to recover. During this period, patients must follow the instructions as advised by the dermatologist by avoiding sunlight, using topical antibiotics and avoiding heavy exercise. It also has to be kept in mind that all such treatments come at a high price. Therefore we need to carefully study the mechanics of each procedure on the basis of affordability, recovery time and suitability before we choose one.
