Benzoyl Peroxide Wash
Benzoyl peroxide is the most recommended and most used chemical in the
treatment of acne. Though there are many over the counter products containing benzoyl peroxide in combinations
with salicyclic acid or other chemicals, using benzoyl peroxide wash with or without prescription is a widely
used treatment. It has to be understood that benzoyl peroxide works to kill the bacterial infection alone
caused by acne and does not reduce the secretion of oil in the sebaceous glands.
Benzoyl peroxide wash is used in the form of cleansers, liquid washes and soaps. Liquid washes need to be shaken
properly before use. When used as a cleanser, the affected area should be wetted with water and then benzoyl
peroxide should be rubbed on for 10-20 seconds. When used in the form of soap or a liquid wash too, the chemical
should be applied on the skin with gentle massages taking care not to rub the skin. Whatever the form of product,
care should be taken not to apply the product in the eyes or hair, as benzoyl peroxide is a bleach.
If benzoyl peroxide wash is used as per the doctor’s prescription, the dosage should be followed carefully.
However, if a certain dose is missed, it should be skipped. Taking double doses of the product is not advisable.
The product should not be shared with other users and should not be stored indefinitely even though it is in the
form of a cleanser or cream. During the initial use of the product, side effects may include irritation, dryness
and redness of the skin. Other severe side effects may include breathing problems and dizziness.

Usage of benzoyl peroxide wash may make the skin sensitive to sunlight. Wearing sunglasses and suntan lotions,
avoiding going out into the sun immediately after the use of the product are some precautionary measures that can
be taken. Users should also examine if they have a history of past allergies to benzoyl peroxide or any other
medication which might trigger a reaction when used along with benzoyl peroxide. Users should also avoid using
other medicated products while using benzoyl peroxide wash. Harsh soaps, perfumes, creams, hair colors containing
alcohol should be avoided. Pregnant women suffering from acne should also consult their physician before using any
such dosage.
As compared to its side effects, use of benzoyl peroxide wash has certain advantages. It is available readily in
various forms. Users can choose from a wide variety of forms such as creams, toners, medicines and soaps. Research
has established that benzoyl peroxide actually compliments the effectiveness of other drugs such as salicyclic
acid, erythromycin and clindamycine. The chemical does not provide resistance in the body for a long period of
time.
Further researches are being carried out to improve the efficiency of benzoyl peroxide without causing
irritation. Recently, benzoyl peroxide has been prepared as a creamy wash and gel in a hydrophane base. Studies
have showed that this new benzoyl peroxide wash has caused less irritation and was proven to be more effective than
existing products. Another combination that is being tested is urea, which is believed to moisturize the skin and
kill bacteria at the same time. If these studies are successful, then benzoyl peroxide can be considered as the
most suitable treatment for acne.
