Black head Treatments
Blackheads can be defined as a mild form of acne, which appear as
protrusions on the skin. Blackheads get their black color due to the lack of melanin in the affected areas.
Internal health concerns such as thyroid, anemia, indigestion and constipation are also believed to be causes
of blackheads. Apart from the regular blackhead treatments such as topical and oral applications, (salicyclic
acid, retin-A) and surgical procedures (dermabrasion and laser resurfacing), certain other treatments can be
tried out to cure blackheads.
Metallic extractors are the most commonly used blackhead treatments, which are used to plug blackheads. Such
extractors too come in different specifications according to the severity of blackheads. For example, extractor
with a lancet is an instrument containing two ends, one to create a hole and the other to extract dirt. This basic
form of an extractor is commonly used by dermatologists and at home. Other modified extractors include the double
spoon extractor where one end is spoon shaped. This is useful for large blackheads and can be used safely by
beginners.

Blackheads typically affect the area around the nose. Nose blackheads are more painful than regular blackheads.
The most effective treatment to remove nose blackheads are the use of blackhead removal strips. Such nose strips
use a particular type of glue to rip the blackhead. Before using these strips, the face should be cleaned gently
and dried. Later after wetting the nose alone, the strip should be applied for ten minutes. Then the strip should
be pulled out in one go with force. After the removal of the blackheads, the face should be cleaned again with cold
water. However, excessive usage of such strips may cause irritation in the skin.
Another not so popular blackhead treatment is the vacuum blackhead remover. Under this treatment, the skin is
massaged and the instrument’s powerful vacuum is used to suck out the blackhead. Unlike other approaches, which
irritate the skin or cause pain, this treatment does not cause much pain. However, it cannot be established that
this treatment cures blackheads. This treatment does not prove to be effective for stubborn blackheads.
Leading cosmetic companies have come out with cleansing pads containing 2% salicyclic acid as blackhead
treatments. Cleansing pads help in not just removing make up dirt from the face but their regular use can be
effective on blackheads to a certain extent. On the other hand, if cleansing pads with higher amounts of salicyclic
acid are used, it may cause dryness of skin. Special treatments offered in beauty salons are also a convenient way
of getting rid of black heads.
Beauty salons offer a package of treatments such as steaming, extraction of blackheads, and application of the
appropriate face masks to control blackhead appearances. Treating the skin to these medications regularly for about
2-3 times a week can effectively reduce blackheads. An advantage of this blackhead treatment is that it is less
expensive than other conventional treatments, and it is done by trained professionals who understand each type of
skin. Hence they are reliable. However, this treatment should not be overdone as it may cause after effects. The
most important thing is to avoid squeezing blackheads as scars caused this way, may remain permanent.
